Google Inc. (GOOG) Promise Strong Fight

Google Inc., which is being sued by Viacom Inc. for alleged copyright infringement, fired back Friday when CEO Eric Schmidt called the media conglomerate a company "built on lawsuits."
Mountain View-based Google (NASDAQ:GOOG - News) and its video-sharing site YouTube Inc. are being sued for $1 billion by New York-based Viacom (NYSE:VIA - News), the parent company of Comedy Central, MTV, Paramount Pictures, and Nickelodeon.
Schmidt, speaking at the 25th annual Allen & Co. meting, said litigation is the foundation of Viacom, which has sued Google because the companies couldn't reach a distribution deal over content posted on YouTube.
In May Google moved for dismissal of the suit, saying it was protected by the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which provides protection for Internet service providers from liability for the actions of their users. The safe harbor protection says that if Web site owners and operators remove material when asked by copyright holders, they are not responsible for copyright violations.
Viacom says YouTube has almost 160,000 unauthorized Viacom clips on its site, and they have been viewed more than 1.5 billion times
