Housing Outlook Shows Little Hope

Springtime usually means good times in the housing industry, but this year it's threatening to become a grim season of reckoning.
Signs of a sobering slowdown emerged throughout March, ranging from gloomy forecasts among homebuilders to a growing number of high-risk borrowers struggling to make payments on exotic mortgages they probably couldn't afford in the first place.
The latest flare came this week as Lennar Corp., one of the nation's largest homebuilders, reported a 73 percent drop in its first-quarter profit and warned that its results for the remainder of the year won't live up to previous expectations.

Hot Stocks of the Week

The volatility of the first quarter that ended Friday, was reflected in several stocks that saw unusual activity during the week, including a drop for Boston Scientific and a jump for Abbott Laboratories.
Boston Scientific Corp. slid 6.6 percent Monday after a study showed a heart stent made by Abbott had lower rates of target vessel failure. This means the drug-coated stent performed better than Boston Scientific's Taxus.
The study was originally meant to show that the Abbott stent, called Xience, was merely not inferior to Taxus. Both stocks traded with very heavy volume, and sent shares of other stent makers into accelerated trading as well.
Shares of Boston Scientific sank to a nearly five-year low of $13.88 on the news, with volume approaching three times its typical trade of about 12 million shares. The New York Stock Exchange-listed shares recovered slightly as the week continued as volume returned to more normal levels, ending the week at $14.54.
Meanwhile, Abbott shares on Monday gained 6 percent and hit an all-time high of $57.26, with trading volume almost four times a typical day. Volume remained high Tuesday as shares began to slip a bit, and by Friday the stock settled back to close at $55.80, still up 3.6 percent for the week.
Nuvelo Inc. shot up 25 percent Tuesday to $3.86, after the smallcap company said the Food and Drug Administration has granted "fast-track" status to its colon cancer drug candidate as both a first- and second-line treatment.
That means Nuvelo can submit data to the FDA on a rolling basis rather than all at once, speeding up the application process.
Trading volume jumped to about 9 times its usual volume, with 28 million shares changing hands on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Activity remained high Wednesday, though volatility leveled out. The stock gave back some of its Tuesday gains but ended the week up 19 percent at $3.68.
On Wednesday, Beazer Homes USA Inc. plunged more than 8 percent to $28.77 on the NYSE, after the FBI said it is among agencies investigating possible fraud in the company's mortgage lending practices and other financial transactions.
The homebuilder said it was cooperating with a federal prosecutor's request for documents. The news came on top of ongoing struggles for the Atlanta-based company, which has suffered hefty losses amid a downturn in the housing market.
Trading volume swelled to 19.6 million shares changing hands, from a typical level of 1.6 million shares.
The U.S. attorney's office in Charlotte, N.C., along with the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development are also participating in the investigation.
Volume settled back down the rest of the week, though the stock didn't recoup much of the loss. Shares of Beazer ended the week down 7.6 percent at $29.03.
RF Micro Devices Inc., which makes components used in mobile phones, on Thursday shed 11 percent to end at $6.31 on the Nasdaq, after the company projected a first-quarter slowdown. Trading volume zoomed to 63.3 million shares, from a usual 8.7 million shares changing hands.
The news prompted a Jefferies analyst to downgrade the stock. The company blamed lighter demand from a top customer, but did not provide more details. Analysts suspect the customer is mobile phone maker Motorola Inc., which recently warned of a more than $1 billion expected sales miss.
Shares lost another 8 cents Friday, with volume nearing 40.6 million shares, to close the week at $6.23.
Friday, Dendreon Corp. more than doubled its share price with extraordinarily heavy trading volume, surging $7.71 to $12.93 on the Nasdaq, and during the session spiked to $18.05, its highest point since December 2000. Volume approached 92.5 million shares, more than the 75.7 million shares the company had outstanding
The drug maker said a Food and Drug Administration panel endorsed its experimental prostate cancer vaccine, Provenge. The FDA advisers said the vaccine is safe, and said there is substantial evidence that it works in treating advanced prostate cancer that no longer responds to hormone treatment. The drug needs further study before it can be approved.

Stock Market Wrapup Mar. 30

Stocks rebounded from a volatile morning session to essentially close flat. A change in U.S. tariff policies towards some goods from China put a scare into investors in the morning who feared the start of a trade war, but stocks were gradually able to rebound in the afternoon and push into positive territory. Crude oil prices eased modestly. Overshadowing crude was a sharp drop in corn futures prices following an upbeat corn crop forecast from the government. The 10-year Treasury note closed unchanged.
Stocks dropped sharply in the morning after the Commerce Department announced it was reversing a long-standing policy and that tariffs will be imposed on some Chinese goods. The Bush Administration also said it is considering a request from the U.S. paper industry for protection from cheaper imports from China. In economic news, the Commerce Department earlier reported February personal income rose at a seasonally adjusted rate of 0.6%. Personal consumption grew 0.6% from the prior month.
Corn futures fell sharply on the Chicago Board of Trade after the federal government released its crop forecast. The Department of Agriculture said farmers will plant 90.5 million acres of corn this spring, above its earlier estimate of 87 million acres, and about 15% more than the 78 million acres of corn planted last year. Ethanol producers like Archer Daniels Midland (NYSE: ADM - News), who are expected to be buyers of the additional corn output, will benefit from the lower prices.
Shares of drugmaker Novartis (NYSE: NVS - News) shed -3.9% after the Food & Drug Administration asked the Swiss company to stop selling its irritable bowel treatment Zelnorm after it was linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Zelnorm generated $561 million in sales in 2006, about 80% of which came from the U.S. market. The drug had been approved for the short-term treatment of constipation in women with IBS, and for patients younger than 65 with chronic constipation.
In merger news, two Los Angeles billionaires joined forces to bid for Tribune Co. (NYSE: TRB - News), which owns the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, numerous broadcast and other media properties, and the Chicago Cubs baseball team. Eli Broad and Ron Burkle submitted a bid valued at $34 a share that includes an employee ownership provision, according to reports. Tribune was pushed to seek a buyer by its disgruntled major shareholder, the Chandler family. Tribune shares gained 1.9% today.
Shares of game maker Take-Two Interactive Software (Nasdaq: TTWO - News) slipped -4.6% after a group of shareholders that control 46% of the company's stock succeeded in efforts to replace the current board with six new directors. The maker of the "Grand Theft Auto" game was caught up in an options back-dating scandal that resulted in a guilty plea to related charges from former Chairman and Chief Executive Ryan Brant.
PC maker Dell (Nasdaq: DELL - News) traded lower after the company said an internal investigation of its accounting practices had revealed evidence of misconduct, but the company did not say what it found. Dell, which faces federal investigations into its finances, said it will likely need to restate prior financial results once its internal probe is complete.

Dendreon Corp. (DNDN) Stock Soars

Shares in Dendreon Corp. (DNDN, 5.22) are up more than 250% in pre-market action after an advisory committee of The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that there is substantial evidence of efficacy and safety in the use of the company's cancer vaccine Provenge for men with advanced prostate cancer.
The FDA will now review the advisory committee's recommendations, and is scheduled to decide by May 15 whether to approve Provenge for sale.
Unlike other cancer vaccines which aim to prevent disease, Dendreon's drug is meant to fight an existing cancer. The advisory committee voted 17 to 0 in favor of the safety of Provenge and 13 to 4 in favor on efficacy. Trading of the stock was halted late Thursday ahead of the FDA advisory committee vote.
The Seattle-based company said in a press release that prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the U.S., and the third most common cancer worldwide. More than one million men in the United States have prostate cancer, with an estimated 218,890 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed each year.
Separately, we currently have an Overweight stance on the Health Care Sector, noting double-digit growth rates and the sector's defensive characteristics.

Jim Cramer's Mad Money Stock Recap Mar. 29

Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes (NYSE: GOL - News)
"Monopolistic, anti-competitive behavior is now in style in Brazil!" declared Cramer, who is bullish on GOL, a Brazilian airline which is acquiring its long-time competitor, Varig, after it went "belly up." At less than $100 million in cash, Varig was a bargain, and Cramer thinks the acquisition should send GOL up 30% in a straight line to $40. While Wednesday's 10% increase would otherwise inspire caution, Cramer does not think investors should wait for GOL to pull back, but would go ahead and buy; "We're in 'never-look-back-ville'!"

Benefit of the Doubt: Polo Ralph Lauren (NYSE: RL - News) COO Roger Farah, and Saks' (NYSE: SKS - News) Steve Sadove and Ron Frasch
Next on Cramer's list of executives who deserve the benefit of the doubt is RL's COO Roger Farah. While CEO Ralph Lauren is a "visionary" Cramer credits Farah for breathing new life in the brand "which had been spread out, truncated, over-licensed and diluted... and he turned it back into a powerhouse." Cramer likes RL because it is "the ultimate high-end play" and should have 12% to 15% growth. He also praised the company for purchasing the rest of Polo.com. However, market players turned on Farah after RL's fantastic quarter because they suspected him of guiding down estimates. In spite of Farah's assurances, the stock is still down, although it has recovered somewhat, and Cramer would stay with RL. He also likes SKS CEO Steve Sadove because he "keeps the money coming in" and its vice chairman and chief merchant Ron Frasch who is a"merchandizing genius," according to Cramer.

Sell Block: Syntax-Brillian Corp. (NasdaqGM: BRLC), AT&T (NYSE: T - News), Verizon (NYSE: VZ - News), BP (NYSE: BP - News), Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM - News), Transocean (NYSE: RIG - News), Movado (NYSE: MOV - News), BigBand Networks (NasdaqGM: BBND), Sourcefire (NasdaqGM: FIRE), Glu Mobile (NasdaqGM: GLUU), Aruba Networks (NasdaqGM: ARUN), Clearwire (NasdaqGS: CLWR), ETelecare (NasdaqGM: ETEL)
No matter how much he likes BRLC's story, he would sell the stock after CEO Vincent Solitto touted his company on Mad Money but failed to mention that he raised $15.5 million through a side deal which involved issuing shares at a special price "To me, it was galling... it was disspiriting," said Cramer; "Syntax-Brillian?... I don't like your style." Cramer would trade some T for VZ because VZ is less expensive and has a higher yield. He also suggested selling BP and picking up XOM "if you absolutely have to own an integrated" or RIG. He mentioned MOV has a good entry point at $28.74. Cramer gave an update on IPOs, saying he still likes BBND which he would buy it on any weakness, but suggests schnitzeling out of (selling the profits from) FIRE. He still doesn't like GLUU or ARUN. Cramer says CLWR is "on sale" now that it is settled into the $20-$21 range. Finally, Cramer would take profits from ETEL on any strength, since it has increased substantially.
CEO Interview: Scott Huennekens, Volcano (NasdaqGM: VOLC) with General Electric (NYSE: GE - News), Koninklijke Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG - News)
Cramer asked Scott Huennekens to explain VOLC's agreements with GE and PHG; "GE has rights to one version of our product that it can integrate into its cath lab, and earlier this week we announced the deal with Philips for another versioną„¤ So as we move forward, GE is going to have exclusivity to the advanced functionality version of the product, and the lower functionality version will also be incorporated onto Philips and other larger manufacturer systems," Huennekens said. He envisions every cath lab with an Ivus machine in it as the need to visualize arteries through less invasive approaches increases. Cramer gave VOLC a triple buy.

Jim Cramer's Wall Street Confidential Mar. 29

Bear Stearns (NYSE: BSC - News), Merrill Lynch (NYSE: MER - News)
Cramer discussed the bears' foiled attempt to bring the market down through ETFs, and noted they were not able to take the market below the intraday low on Wednesday. The bears missed a valuable opportunity to prevent mark-ups on Thursday. Cramer explained that mark-ups are "highly illegal" yet "difficult to catch." Cramer would look at BSC, which is less linked to subprime lending than MER. Given that BSC is up 3 points on a Lehma Brother'supgrade, he is not concerned about BSC for now. What Cramer is concerned about is gold going down, and concerning Fed chairman Ben Bernanke's remarks, Cramer said, "People really misinterpreted Bernanke yesterday. There is no central banker in the world that's going to come in front of Congress and say they are not worried about inflation." However, Cramer doesn't feel inflation is the real issue; "The issue is poor people and the middle class and whether they can get loans," Cramer said. "The fact that there could be some liquidity coming into the brokers doesn't necessarily mean there's going to be liquidity coming into the poor people."

Jim Cramer's Stop Trading Mar. 29

Reliance Steel (NYSE: RS - News), U.S. Steel (NYSE: X - News), Lone Star (NYSE: LSS - News): Cramer suggests buying RS which was up 3% on the deal between X and LSS, but is still "the cheapest that's left" in the consolidation-driven steel sector. Concerning the acquisition of LSS, Cramer said "What a deal!"
GlobalSantaFe (NYSE: GSF - News): Cramer thinks a "monster seller" is doing investors a favor by giving them an opportunity to buy GSF, which Cramer thinks may be a takeover or merger targetfor Seadrill.
Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM - News), Frozen Food Express (NasdaqGM: FFEX), RadioShack (NYSE: RSH - News): Cramer likes TTM as a secular growth story and doesn't think it will be affected by India's overheated economy. Cramer is looking into FFEX because of Bob Olstein's recommendation; "This guy, you've got to take down everything he says. That's how great he is." Cramer also likes RSH.

Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM - News): 'I am concerned about YUM ... it didn't go down enough after the Taco Bell incident... I think that you should get out of YUM.'Stride Rite (NYSE: SRR - News): 'The quarter wasn't that good ... they've got to show some growth in the core, regular Stride Rite shoes, and they didn't do it. I think that stock is not going up here. Sell, sell, sell.'Nvidia (NasdaqGS: NVDA): 'I am not a fan of graphic chips. It's too expensive.
