Stock Market Wrapup April 30th

Stocks traded indifferently before closing lower on mixed economic data. The government reported weak consumer spending in March, but an important inflation measure was flat. Technology stocks suffered more today than the Blue Chips as investors weighed the consumer spending news. Crude oil prices declined 75 cents a barrel in New York trading, while the 10-year Treasury note advanced.
The Commerce Department reported consumer spending grew by a slower-than-expected 0.3% in March compared to February, when spending increased at a revised 0.7%. After adjusting for price increases and taking spending for energy out of the equation, consumer spending actually declined -0.2% last month. The price index for personal consumption expenditures, an inflation gauge closely watched by the Federal Reserve, was flat in March when food and energy costs are excluded.
Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ - News) closed up 0.8% after reporting its Q1 revenue rose but its net income declined -8.4% to $1.5 billion. The drop was attributed to the loss of income from assets sold in the past year, offset by growth in its Verizon Wireless unit and from its new fiber-optic high-speed service offering TV, voice, and Internet. Revenue grew 6.4% to $22.6 billion. The results beat Wall Street forecasts.
Shares of health insurer Humana (NYSE: HUM - News) lost -2.6% after the company reported a -15% drop in its Q1 profit. The company's results beat expectations, and it raised its outlook for the full year. The company said enrollment in its Medicare Advantage plans grew 50% compared with the year-ago period, and was up 11% since year-end to exceed 1.1 million. The drop in shares was attributed to profit taking.
Investors cheered the results posted by packaged food maker Kellogg (NYSE: K - News), pushing the stock to a 52-week high. The maker of Eggo waffles and Keebler cookies reported a 17% increase in Q1 net income on a 9% increase in revenue. Excluding one-time gains, Kellogg beat analyst estimates. The company also boosted its full-year guidance. Meat processor Tyson Foods (NYSE: TYN - News), meanwhile, returned to profitability in its fiscal Q2. Tyson reported a profit of $68 million, or 19 cents per share, against a year-ago loss of -$127 million, or -37 cents per share, and also raised its earnings outlook. The stock initially jumped on the news but faded in the afternoon.
In other news, German stock market operator Deutsche Boerse said it agreed to buy U.S.-based options exchange International Securities Exchange (NYSE: ISE - News) for $2.8 billion in cash. ISE's stock jumped 45.9%. The German exchange offered $67.50 a share, which is a 48% premium over Friday's closing price. Deutsche Boerse has been shopping for acquisition candidates since it lost out to NYSE Group (NYSE: NYX - News) in a bid to acquire Europe's Euronext market.
Finally, shares of Citigroup (NYSE: C - News) moved higher after a news report in London suggested the company could come under pressure to break itself into smaller pieces from activist hedge funds. Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO - News) closed lower after announcing it would buy the 80% of advertising exchange operator Right Media it did not already own.

Consumer Spending Sluggish in March

Consumer spending rose at the slowest rate in five months in March while construction activity managed only a tiny gain, weighed down by further weakness in housing.
The Commerce Department reported that consumer spending on all items was up 0.3 percent last month, the slowest increase since a similar rise in October. Incomes rose by 0.7 percent, the fourth straight solid month of income growth.
Spending on building projects edged up a slight 0.2 percent in March as strength in hotel and shopping center contruction offset the 11th drop in housing activity over the past year.
The tiny 0.2 percent rise pushed total construction activity to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.19 trillion in March, down 2 percent from a year ago, as the building industry has been hardhit by the slump in housing.

Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) Profit Falls

Verizon Communications Inc.'s first-quarter earnings fell 8.4 percent to $1.5 billion as the loss of income from some divested operations outweighed another strong showing by the telephone company's fast-growing wireless business.

The profit for the first three months of 2007 amounted to 51 cents per share, the company reported Monday. In the same period last year, before Verizon's divestiture of its phone directories business, earnings totaled $1.63 billion, or 56 cents per share.
The latest results included a loss of 5 cents per share on the forced divestiture of Verizon's stake in a Venezuelan telecommunications company as the government there nationalized assets.

Jim Cramer's Mad Money Stock Recap April 27th

At Your Laser: Ionatron (NasdaqGM: IOTN)
One stock Cramer likes for the CNBC Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge and even more for an actual speculative play is IOTN which produces lasers. The company makes both lethal and non-lethal lasers which are effective in locating and detonating explosive devices. The stock fell from $14 to $5 last May when it was passed up for a military contract, but IOTN has improved its technology to fit devices on existing vehicles, and Cramer predicts it will get the contract this time around and squeeze the shorts. He would do homework before buying the stock.

A Roll of the Dice: Penn National Gaming Inc. (NasdaqGS: PENN)
Next on Cramer's list of attractive takeover targets for private equity firms is PENN, a gaming company which is not among the most famous names, but gives "regular people all over the country the opportunity to foolishly flush their hard-earned money down the slots." The purchase of Harrah's is proof that private equity firms would consider a gaming play, and since PENN is smaller and cheaper, it would be easier to purchase. He predicts PEN will be taken over at a premium; "I think this one could make you over 30%, if you play your cards right," Cramer said.

Game Plan for the Coming Week: Vulcan Materials (NYSE: VMC - News), Avon (NYSE: AVP - News), Quest (NYSE: Q - News), Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG - News), Medco Health (NYSE: MHS - News), Wyndham Hotels (NYSE: WYN - News), General Cable (NYSE: BGC - News), Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG - News), Buffalo Wild Wings (NasdaqGS: BWLD), Allergan (NYSE: AGN - News), Transocean (NYSE: RIG - News), Trinity Industries (NYSE: TRN - News), American Railcar (NasdaqGS: ARII), Celgene (NasdaqGS: CELG), Charter Communications (NasdaqGM: CHTR), Level 3 (NasdaqGS: LVLT), Anderson's (NasdaqGS: ANDE), Estee Lauder (NYSE: EL - News), KBR Inc. (NYSE: KBR - News)
Monday: Cramer said the best strategy for the coming week is to grab winners ahead of their reports, and added there are so many great names, it may be hard to choose. On Monday, he likes VMC, up 82% with room to run.
Tuesday: Cramer has freed AVP from permanent residence on his Sell Block segment and predicts AVP will hit a "homerun." The stock is up a little over a dollar and has great BRIC exposure. Although Quest has had a 43% gain, Cramer is still backing it, and anticipates the announcement of a buyback or a dividend increase. He thinks PG will join the ranks of Pepsi and Coke thanks to its international success. MHS is "a member of the pantheon of consistency if there ever was one," since it is leveraged to drugs going generic and off patent. Cramer likes WYN as a baby boomer play and expects rosy numbers. After the bell, GC is a pick Cramer believes will go higher, although it has had a recent run-up. Concerning CMG and BWLD, he said, "I praise these stocks endlessly and correctly. I'm not stopping now."
Wednesday: Although Allergan is up 23% and "everyone is freaking out about competition," Cramer is not worried. He still likes RIG, but since it has risen 11%, Cramer would wait for it to come in a bit. He is also bullish on rail stocks TRN and ARII.
Thursday: Cramer says CELG has been "perking along" up from under $55 in February to over $61 now and predicts it will rally. He would sell CHTR before the quarter and buy it back. He reiterated his bullishness on LVLT and noted its strong organic growth and improved balance sheet. Cramer is looking forward to witnessing a short squeeze when ANDE reports; "We're going into ethanol harvest season. What are these people thinking? Go long, not short." He also likes EL as "the quintessential weak-dollar play."
Friday: Cramer suggests viewers invest in KBR "the only overlooked infrastructure play left on Earth," and says KBR will follow other giants in the sector, which have rallied.
Mad Mail, Cummins Engine (NYSE: CMI - News): Cramer congratulates those viewers who heeded his call to buy CMI and made some money; "We really nailed that one," he said.

'Quiksilver (NYSE: ZQK): 'Everyone tells me that they're bottomed... I went out the other day and said I was negative on it. I didn't like the acquisition they made. People have been telling me that I'm dead wrong about that... That stock is a house of pain, and I'm staying away from it!'Micron Technology (NYSE: MU): 'Let me tell you something, that's a loser! Jim Cramer's Wall Street Confidential April 27th

Amazon (NasdaqGS: AMZN), Whirlpool (NYSE: WHR - News) and F5 Networks (NasdaqGS: FFIV)
Cramer devoted the program to giving tips on shorting; "If you're going to short, you can only do it with puts, you cannot do it with common," he said. Last week, the shorts didn't believe FFIV, a web traffic coordinator, had growth potential, that AMZN, which had increased 70% since August, had any more upside, and WHR would do well because its last quarter was not strong. None of the three companies had good guidance, but Cramer asked, "They didn't know how to guide going into the quarter, why would we trust their guidance going out?" and added the companies were "sandbagging." Cramer explained how he would have shorted these stocks; "I would've bought the Whirlpool 90 puts for a couple of bucks, or maybe the 85 puts if you thought it was going to fall apart," he explained. "With Amazon, the 40 puts would've been right." Cramer added FFIV "is a stock that is up so monstrously that two strikes down would've been right."

Delta Air Lines Inc. Exits Bankrupcy

Delta Air Lines Inc. has undergone a major facelift during more than a year and a half in bankruptcy, but other changes are on the way as the nation's No. 3 carrier exits Chapter 11 on Monday.
Among other things, it has set aside $10 million for a rebranding effort, the company's chief bankruptcy lawyer, Marshall Huebner, said in court recently. Executives at Delta also have said that after the company exits bankruptcy, it will consider shedding Comair, a Delta subsidiary that provides regional service for the airline.

Investors Await Spending and Jobs Data

Corporate America's strong profits helped drive the Dow Jones industrials past 13,000 for the first time last week, but investors will want to see if U.S. consumers also have financial muscle before pushing stocks much higher.

In addition to more earnings data, market participants will be examining this week's data on personal spending and the job market. Now that the Dow has gained more than 760 points since April began, some investors are proceeding cautiously -- upcoming data showing the economy is slowing too quickly or that inflation is getting out of control could trigger a sell-off. High inflation keeps the Federal Reserve from lowering interest rates, which would boost spending.
