China Automotive Systems Inc., which supplies power steering parts and systems, said Monday its second-quarter profit more than tripled on strong product sales.
Net income soared to $2.5 million, or 10 cents per share, compared with $751,636, or 3 cents per share, in the previous year.
Revenue for the quarter rose 47 percent to $36.3 million versus $24.8 million in the prior year.
Sales from steering components for passenger and light-duty vehicles increased 45 percent to $22.8 million, while sales from steering components for commercial vehicles leaped 64 percent to $9.9 million.

China Automotive Systems Inc. shares jumped 21% to $9.33 in Monday morning trade after the power steering components and systems supplier reported third-quarter net earnings of $1.53 million, or 7 cents a share, up from $804,388, or 5 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose to $22.7 million from $14.8 million. "Third quarter is normally a slow season in Chinese passenger vehicle market due to the summer," said Hanlin Chen, chairman and chief executive, in a statement. "However, we see little sign of slow-down in the sedan market. Our key customers, Chery Auto and Geely Auto continue to gain market share in China's domestic market with their economy cars."
