Volume Spikes Today

The following companies showed unusually heavy volume in Monday midday trading on the Nasdaq. Higher-than-normal volume can indicate increased activity by institutions such as mutual funds and insurance companies. Upward stock movement on such volume can show increased confidence among investors, while selling can signal pressure on a stock.
Biopharmaceutical company Micromet Inc. traded heavily after the Carlsbad, Calif.-based company said it received a $10 million milestone payment from biotech Serono SA. The companies are collaborating on a new cancer treatment.
About 2.8 million shares of Micromet changed bands, about four times more than their average daily volume. The stock surged $1.54, or 76.2 percent, to $3.56.
Forbes Medi Tech Inc. traded 36 times more than usual, with 4.7 million shares changing hands after the company said preliminary results of a mid-stage trial of its cholesterol-reducing drug fell short of expectations.
Shares declined $1.40, or 59.1 percent, to a new 52-week low of 97 cents.
SCO Group Inc. traded more than usual for the second trading day after a judge dismissed of 187 out of 294 claims the company filed against IBM Corp. in a suit accusing the computer giant of donating proprietary Unix software code to Linux developers. The move weakened SCO's lawsuit, which was filed in 2003.
Shares traded 14 times more than usual, with volume of 1.4 million shares. The stock fell 39 percent Friday and on Monday shed another 14 cents, or 11.4 percent, to $1.08. Earlier, the stock set a new 52-week low of $1.05.
Gold Kist Inc. traded 13 times more than usual, with volume of 10.4 million shares, after poultry producer Pilgrim's Pride Corp. said it will pay $1.1 billion, or $21 per share, for Gold Kist.
Shares of Gold Kist rose 90 cents, or 4.5 percent, to $20.87.
