Jim Cramer's Mad Money Stock Recap Nov. 20th

On Tuesday's show Cramer gave out 5 rules for investing in the stock market. His first rule is that there is a market for everything, including the stocks themselves. He said an example was how ethanol stocks were very hot about a year ago, and then several IPOs came on the market, so there was an oversupply of ethanol stocks on the market and the entire sector went down. So the ethanol business and news didn't matter because there were too many ethanol stocks available. Cramer said another example was his recommendation of Sealy (ZZ) at its IPO where he liked the stock, but didn't realize that there was a glut of IPOs, so the IPO market was saturated and the stock tanked.
Cramer took soma calls. The first caller asked how you can know whether an IPO is a good investment or not, and Cramer said that the key is the offering price for the shares. Another caller asked if there are any sectors that Wall Street overlooks, and Cramer said that you should look for a sector that used to have 10 analysts and only has 1 or 2 now and consider that sector for a turnaround. The next caller asked about the Vonage (VG) IPO, and Cramer said that this IPO was overhyped and that they should not have let the company sell stock to its customers.
Cramer's second rule is to know what you own. Sectors don't always matter since stocks within a sector can rally without others. Industries within a sector are the key to rallies, not the sector itself. An example occurred a couple years ago when he called for a tech rally and recommended Cisco (CSCO) and Microsoft (MSFT) because they were the big tech stocks, and he should have been thinking more specifically about the gadget industry within tech, since stocks like Apple (AAPL) were up big. He also said that he wants you to do at least 1 hour of homework each week for each stock you own. He thinks you should give your money to a mutual fund if you don't have enough time.
A caller asked why you don't see big rallies in the biotech sector, and Cramer explained that biotech stocks are moved by FDA rulings, not broader industry moves. The next caller asked how to find the pin action within a sector that Cramer talks about, and he used an example where Boeing (BA) reported a great quarter, and you should look to see who makes the components of the planes they make, since their sales will rise with Boeing's. The next caller asked how to predict performance if a sector is split, like Internet search with Yahoo! (YHOO) and Google (GOOG), and Cramer said that you need to look at management and other company specific factors in that case.
Cramer's third rule is that Latin America should always be treated as a shorter term trade since Wall Street has preconceived notions about the region that prevent it from being a long term investment, and they are the ones who move the market. You should always take profits as a Latin American stock moves up so you don't get caught when the big investors move out of their trade. A caller asked how important our economy is to Chinese stocks, and Cramer said that he doesn't like to recommend Chinese stocks because he doesn't trust their economy. The other caller asked about stocks like Wal-mart (WMT) and Starbucks (SBUX) that are expanding in China, and Cramer said that Starbucks could be the next Yum! Brands (YUM) which doubled their stock price after they doubled their stores in China.
Cramer's next rule is that being a lemming is ok, but he still wants you to go your homework, but if you agree with the moves that big investors are making, then it's good to go with the momentum.
His last rule was to not be afraid to say that something is too difficult to invest or trade on. His example is restaurant same store sales, which he has been crushed on in the past since there are so many factors that contribute to the number and the reaction. He said you aren't being weak, but smart by focusing your time someplace where you can make money.

Vonage Holdings Corporation (VG) and Sprint (S) Settle Patent Dispute

Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S - News) and Vonage (NYSE: VG - News) today announced that they have settled their ongoing patent dispute and entered into a licensing arrangement under Sprint's Voice over Packet ("VOP") patent portfolio. On September 25, 2007, a jury in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., found that Vonage had infringed six Sprint patents. The settlement agreement resolves all claims related to this dispute.
In addition, Sprint has agreed to license Vonage its VOP portfolio, which comprises more than 100 patents covering different methods, components and systems that efficiently connect telephone calls between a regular telephone network and a packet-switched network such as the Internet.
"We are pleased to resolve our dispute with Sprint and enter into a productive future relationship," said Sharon O'Leary, Vonage chief legal officer.
"We view this settlement and licensing agreement as a validation of the strength and breadth of our patent portfolio," said Harley Ball, Sprint Nextel's vice president of intellectual property. "This is an affirmation of Sprint's research and development and a testament to the rich history of innovation at Sprint Nextel.

Stock Market Wrapup Sept. 26th

Equities rose on the day, with all three major market averages solidly in the green. The Dow closed up 100 points, helped by the end of a strike at General Motors (NYSE: GM - News). The Nasdaq, meanwhile, finished up 16 points, while the S&P tacked on 8 points. Oil initially fell after weekly inventories levels unexpectedly rose, but rallied to close up 77 cents to $80.30 a barrel. The price of gold slipped on the day.

In economic news, the Commerce Department reported that demand for durable goods nose-dived in August, with weakness across most categories. Orders fell -4.9% for the month, worse than the -3.5% drop economists were expecting. It was the biggest decline since January, and comes on the heels of a large 6.1% gain in July. Crude oil inventories, meanwhile, unexpectedly rose last week by 1.8 million barrels to 320.6 million barrels. Analysts were expecting inventories to drop by -2 billion barrels.
Topping the headlines today, the United Auto Workers (UAW) and General Motors agreed to a tentative contract early this morning, ending a 2-day strike. As part of the contract, the two sides confirmed that GM would fund a newly created trust that the UAW will run to administer retiree healthcare benefits. For its part, GM will continue to offer some job guarantees. The UAW hopes to strike similar deals with Ford (NYSE: F - News) and Chrysler. Shares of GM spiked 9.4%.
Shares of defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LM - News), General Dynamics (NYSE: GD - News), and Raytheon (NYSE: RTN - News), hit or flirted with all-times Wednesday. Defense Secretary Robert Gates was meeting with Congress today to request an additional $45 billion to cover military costs in Iraq and Afghanistan. If approved, Gates' request will raise initial 2008 budget-year war projections by nearly a third to $190 billion.
Shares of Vonage (NYSE: VG - News) fell below a $1 after a jury found that it infringed on six patents held by Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S - News). The VoIP company was ordered to pay Sprint $69.5 million in damages. Vonage said it will seek to try to have the Sprint judgment overturned. Earlier this year, Vonage lost a patent infringement case to Verizon (NYSE: VZ - News) for $58 million plus royalties. Today, a court upheld two of the three patent infringement charges in a separate verdict.
In M&A news, Nasdaq (Nasdaq: NDAQ - News) and Borse Dubai raised their bid for Swedish exchange OMX to $4.9 billion, a 15% increase over their previous offer. The exchanges also made agreements with several large shareholders that combined control nearly 19% of OMX to now secure half of OMX's shares. The moves were made in response to The Qatar Investment Authority increasing its stake in OMX, which could indicate it may try to block the deal. Elsewhere, Bear Stearns (NYSE: BSC - News) shares rose 7.7% on rumors that the investment bank is close to selling a minority stake in itself. Among the potential suitors named include a Chinese bank, HSBC Holdings, and Warren Buffett, among others.

Jim Cramer's Mad Money Stock Recap April 19th

Follow Slim's Picks: Kraft (NYSE: KFT), Saks (NYSE: SKS), American Movil (NYSE: AMX)
Cramer would pay attention to the "overseas Warren Buffett," Carlos Slim Helu, who has surpassed Buffett on Forbes rich list, partly because of his exposure to emerging market stocks. Looking at Slim's portfolio, Cramer found KFT, which is not one of his favorites, SKS, which he didn't want to feature again, and finally AMX, which he thinks is a great play on the growth of cell phones in Latin America. Although AMX is at its 52-week high, Cramer feels it is "too good not to feature."

Green Day Part 4: Tetra Tech (NasdaqGS: TTEK)
Cramer is bullish on TTEK as a way to play the scarcity of clean drinking water, and noted it is in "the sweet spot" since 85% of its revenue is from water management and it has acquired Delaney Group, "a little wind company."

Sell Block: Charter Communications (NasdaqGM: CHTR), Sirius Satellite Radio (NasdaqGS: SIRI), XM Satellite Radio (NasdaqGS: XMSR), CMGI (NasdaqGM: CMGI), Oilsands Quest (AMEX: BQI) and Crystallex (AMEX: KRY), Vonage (NYSE: VG), Fremont General (NYSE: FMT), Downey Financial (NYSE: DSL)
For his Sell Block Segment, Cramer discussed hot stocks in CNBC's Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge game. Many of the stocks are speculative, and while he encourages speculation it should be undertaken if one's portfolio is balanced. The only one Cramer would buy is CHTR because cable is "on fire" and he predicts the stock will climb to $4 from $3.28. While he is "not totally negative" on SIRI, it is experiencing so many difficulties in its attempts to merge with XMSR that Cramer can not "in good conscience" recommend it. Headspinning changes to its business model make CMGI a sell, and Cramer would also unload BQI and KRY. He reiterated his bearish stance on VG, calling it "the single least investable stock" he's ever seen. While popular, Cramer says FMT has too much subprime exposure and would buy DSL instead.
CEO Interview: Nastech Pharmaceutical's (NasdaqGM: NSTK), Stephen Quay with stocks Celgene (NasdaqGS: CELG), Gilead Sciences (NasdaqGS: GILD), Genzyme (NasdaqGS: GENZ)
When asked what the company's star product is, Stephen Quay replied it was a "horserace" between its obesity and osteoperosis treatments, and its insulin nasal spray for diabetes. While Dr. Eric Hollander has shown that injections can help reverse some symptoms of autism, Stephen Quay comments the treatments are not long-lasting. However, NSTK has been working with Hollander to develop a nasal spray that will last much longer than the injections and expects to begin clinical trials this year. Cramer is bullish on NSTK as well as CELG, GILD and GENZ.

Jim Cramer's Mad Money Stock Recap April 12th

Annaly Capital Management, Inc. (NYSE: NLY - News)
The "tireless Cassandra" of the sub-prime crisis is now the "last man standing," said Cramer, praising Mike Farrell, CEO of NLY. Farrell commented on Mad Money that he saw the crisis on the horizon and pulled back from the residential mortgage business. As a result, NLY has survived where others have fallen. Concerning its $3 rise, Cramer said, "you ain't seen nothing yet" and predicted the stock would double. While NLY is involved in risk, it carries the more benign interest rate risk rather then the hazardous credit risk which has destroyed so many lenders. Since the media fails to make the distinction between the two kinds of risk, it has missed out on reporting on NLY's success, according to Cramer.

Paper Trail: Sappi (NYSE: SPP - News)
Cramer recommends Sappi as a way to play the antisubsidy and antidumping tariffs the U.S has imposed on glossy, coated paper from China. SPP has 10% global market share, and coated paper accounts for 70% of its sales. The company was hurt by the Chinese, but the new legislation should mean a short term increase for the stock, perhaps into the $20s. However, Cramer sees SPP as a trade rather than investment, because he ultimately believes the Chinese will win the paper war.Sell Block: Vonage (NYSE: VG - News), Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ - News), Friedman Billings Ramsey Group (NYSE: FBR - News)
Cramer has one more reason to hate Vonage; while at first glance it may seem to be a good thing that CEO Mike Snyder is leaving, he is being replaced by Jeffrey Citron, who in 2003 was banned from the securities industry and in Cramer's opinion, should not be a CEO of a publicly traded company. On the other hand, a company Cramer liked but has disappointed him is JNJ, over which he lamented "there are very few blue chips left." He is unhappy with the company's fundamentals, its "anemic" pipeline, the fact its big money maker, Risperdal, is going generic, and that its latest product launch has gone "pathetically." Cramer says FBR is "trying to turn lead into gold" and should be avoided; "It's got some really heinous sub-prime exposure," he adds.
CEO Interview: Marc Benioff, Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM - News)
Marc Benioff said his company is "trying to recreate the software industry by delivering a set of Internet services that replace traditional enterprise software." He noted major contracts CRM has signed with Merrill Lynch, Dell and Cisco and commented his company was preferred over Oracle and Microsoft. When Cramer suggested other companies have achieved the same thing and failed, Marc Benioff replied that the openess to change the company's technology and business models would win CRM more high-profile clients. Cramer declared he was neutral on the stock and suggested viewers decide for themselves.

Stock Market Wrapup Apr. 12

Stocks pushed higher today as investors weighed stronger-than-expected gains in retail sales against scattered warnings of a tepid sales outlook for April and an uptick in unemployment claims. Investors spotted buying opportunities in yesterday's pullback, which was fueled by the release of the minutes from the last Federal Open Market Committee meeting. After moderating somewhat in recent sessions, crude oil prices advanced sharply, while the 10-year Treasury note closed unchanged.
Retailers generally reported solid sales in March, buoyed by the early arrival of the Easter holiday. Their announcements followed on the heels of Wednesday's report of strong March sales by Target (NYSE: TGT - News). An exception was the world's No. 1 retailer, Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT - News), which warned that it will be a "challenge" to meet Q1 profit expectations. The company made the announcement even though it posted same-store sales figures that rose 4%, topping the 1% to 2% increase it had forecasted. Conversely, the company said April same-store sales could be flat to down -2%.
Easter's early arrival will negatively impact results in April, many retailers warned. Among the other companies that turned in solid March sales results were Costco Wholesale (Nasdaq: COST - News). The warehouse retailer reported a 6% gain in same-store sales, topping estimates of a 4.7% increase. Mid-market retailer J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP - News) reported a 10.6% increase in same-store sales, exceeding forecasts, while high-end department store operator Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN - News) posted a 15% gain in comparative-store results, which was nearly double estimates.
In a move reminiscent of Michael Dell's return to the helm of Dell (Nasdaq: DELL - News), the founder of embattled Internet phone provider Vonage Holdings (NYSE: VG - News) is returning to the CEO's chair. Jeffrey Citron, founder, chairman, and "chief strategist" replaces Michael Snyder, who stepped down as CEO and resigned from the board. The company is embroiled in a patent battle with Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ - News), which it is, by all accounts, losing. Vonage's shares have shed about -80% of their value since the company's IPO last year.
Another executive shake-up occurred at online job-board provider Monster Worldwide (Nasdaq: MNST - News). The company's shares rose 5.4% on news that CEO William M. Pastore would leave the top job. He will be replaced by Sal Iannuzzi, former CEO of Symbol Technologies. Motorola (NYSE: MOT - News) bought Symbol Technologies in January. Monster had to restate past financial results after a probe into its options program.
Shares of MedImmune (Nasdaq: MEDI - News) jumped 15.3% after announcing the company was exploring its possible sale. MedImmune makes the FluMist flu vaccine. The company has been under pressure from large investors who contend the company could fetch a sizable premium from a bigger pharmaceutical company. Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM - News), meanwhile, shed -8.2% after the BlackBerry maker reported Q4 results that came up short of Wall Street's expectations and issued a disappointing forecast.

Stock Market Wrapup Apr. 9

Stocks traded timidly on the cusp of first-quarter earnings season, which kicks off after tomorrow's closing bell when aluminum giant Alcoa (NYSE: AA - News) becomes the first major company to report results for the quarter ended March 31st. The major market averages were mixed, with tech shares trading slightly lower, while the other major averages eked out fractional gains. There seemed to be little news to spark activity today, though crude oil prices did drop sharply. The 10-year Treasury note also posted a slight gain in today's trading.
Railroad stocks moved higher after Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BKR-B - News) disclosed it had taken a nearly 11% stake in Burlington Northern Santa Fe (NYSE: BNI - News), along with smaller stakes in two other undisclosed railroad companies. Speculation on the remaining candidates focused on Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP - News), Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC - News), and CSX (NYSE: CSX - News), all of which closed higher. Burlington Northern shares finished up 6.5%.
In profit news, chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD - News) warned that its Q1 profit will likely come in below forecasts, but its shares still gained 3.8% on short covering. AMD said revenue will be $1.23 billion, or -$475 million shy of the high end of its initial estimates. Unit sales and average selling prices continue to drop due to its price war with rival Intel (Nasdaq: INTC - News), which closed up 2.7%. AMD said it would impose a partial hiring freeze and curtail other spending in an effort to cut costs. The news drew mixed analyst reaction. JMP Securities, which overall sees an upside to AMD, maintained its "market outperform" rating, but cut its target from $17 to $16. Friedman Billings Ramsey, meanwhile, reiterated its "under perform" rating and cut its target from $10 to $9.
Mortgage investment trust American Home Mortgage Investment (NYSE: AHM - News) plunged -15.2% after the company sharply cut its Q1 earnings forecast. The firm focuses on the prime and near-prime sectors, not subprime, but it warned investors that problems in the secondary mortgage and mortgage-backed securities markets will result in reduced profits of 40 cents to 60 cents a share, sharply lower than its earlier forecast of $1.11 to $1.17 a share in earnings. The company also cut its dividend to 70 cents from $1.12.
In tech news, shares of Internet phone company Vonage Holdings (NYSE: VG - News) sank sharply after the company came up on the wrong end of another ruling in its patent dispute with Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ - News). Last Friday, a federal judge ruled Vonage must stop adding new customers; the company immediately appealed and was granted a temporary stay. The company earlier was found to be in violation of several basic patents held by Verizon.

Vonage Holdings Corporation (VG) Wins Reprieve

Vonage won a temporary reprieve from an appeals court on Friday, hours after a lower court barred it from adding new customers while it appeals a finding it infringed Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ - News) patents for making phone calls over the Internet.

"We just learned, just now, from our legal counsel that we secured a temporary stay until (the appeals court) can hear our request for a permanent stay of that order," said Vonage Holdings Corp. (NYSE:VG - News) spokeswoman Brooke Schulz.

Jim Cramer's Stop Trading Mar. 23

Verizon (NYSE: VZ - News), Vonage (NYSE: VG - News): Cramer wanted to talk about "what a bunch of hucksters" the executives at Vonage are concerning the injunction in a patent case with Verizon which brought the stock down 23%. "Everyone thought that VG should be sitting down with Verizon and talking," commented Cramer who thought it was an outrage the VG did just the opposite; "Swap out of VG into anything!"
Clorox (NYSE: CLX - News), ConAgra Foods (NYSE: CAG - News), Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP - News), Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC - News), CSX Corp (NYSE: CSX - News): Noting that CLX and CAG have new management, Cramer added that they could be broken up as well as rail companies such as UNP "the largest land owner in America," NSC and CSX which also have hidden assetsą„¤ He adds that all of the rails are pro-shareholder.
