CNBC's Stop Trading Jan. 3rd

When the integrated oil companies are doing well, it's hard to make a case for buying refining stocks like Valero (VLO), Jim Cramer said Thursday on CNBC's "Stop Trading!" segment.
Still, he said, "I don't want to sell the refiners too much lower than here."
Speaking of ConocoPhillips (COP), which provided fourth-quarter estimates earlier, Cramer noted that the one bad part of its projection was its expectation that refining margins will decline from the third quarter.
Autos are currently the "worst neighborhood in the world," Cramer said. The Federal Reserve used to care about preserving the carmakers and the housing industry, but no more, Cramer said. Now, he added, the central bank seems to care only about the jobs report.

Jim Cramer's Stop Trading Oct. 10th

Buy Costco (COST), Jim Cramer said Wednesday on CNBC's Stop Trading! segment.
Cramer said the warehouse retailer is uniquely attractive to shoppers because it's an ever-changing experience. "They have an exciting thing," he said. "They made it so you can't regard it as a Wal-Mart (WMT) or a Target (TGT )."
Cramer likes Gap (GPS) because of the incentives set up for new management.
Cramer still likes refiners Valero (VLO), Chevron (CVX) and Conoco (COP) despite recent warnings by Valero and Chevron, because he says recent weeks have seen refining margins "explode."

Stock Market Wrapup July 31st

Equity prices started the day strong on upbeat economic data, but the rally evaporated in the afternoon heat as credit market fears once again took hold of the market. At the close, the Dow Jones Industrials lost -146 points, while the Nasdaq dropped -37. The broader S&P also gave up -19 points on the session. Crude oil ended the day at an all-time closing high of $78.21, up $1.38 on the day.
Several data points came out today in the economic arena, chief among them consumer spending figures. The Commerce Department reported that consumer spending rose 0.1% in June, down from 0.5% in May. The dropoff in spending was due to still falling home prices as well as higher fuel costs. Incomes rose 0.4%. The Conference Board also said today that consumer confidence rose to a six-year high of 112.6. Meanwhile, the Association of Purchasing Management said that construction spending unexpectedly fell last month.
On the corporate earnings front, General Motors (NYSE: GM - News) said net income hit $891 million, or $1.56 a share, compared to a loss of -$3.48 billion, or -$5.98 a share. The automotive giant said revenues declined -13% to $46.8 billion. Excluding charges related to its restructuring, it would have earned $2.48 a share, which handily beat analyst estimates of $1.13 a share. Investors sent the shares up mid-day, but they fell with the overall market at the end of the day.
Elsewhere in earnings, tech giant Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW - News) said it earned $329 million, or 9 cents a share, in its fiscal fourth quarter. It reported a loss of -$301 million, or -9 cents a share, in the same period a year ago. Revenues were little changed at $3.84 billion from $3.83 billion last year. Analysts were looking for a profit of 5 cents a share. Its management attributed its profit beat to cost cutting measures as its operating expenses fell by -25% in the quarter compared to last year. Shares rose 4.3% on the trading session.
Shares of the largest U.S. refiner Valero (NYSE: VLO - News) fell 3.0% after the company said it earned $2.25 billion, or $3.89 a share, up from $1.9 billion, or $2.98 a share, last year. Revenues fell -5.7% to $24.2 billion from $25.6 billion last year. Despite the falloff in revenue, higher refining margins and strong demand for petroleum products drove profits.
In other news, consumer products and pharmaceutical maker Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ - News) said that it would be eliminating -4% of its workforce, which will save the company $1.3-1.6 billion next year. The move comes amid two of its top-selling drugs facing generic competition. Shares rose 0.7%.

Oil Prices Plunge

Oil prices plunged by more than $2 a barrel Tuesday on hopes that the inauguration of a new president in OPEC member Nigeria would contribute to a stable supply from the Niger Delta region.
A formal meeting over the weekend between U.S. and Iranian officials also soothed traders' concerns about a potential conflict between the two countries.
Light, sweet crude for July delivery dropped $2.05 to settle at $63.15 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Before the long weekend, U.S. crude oil climbed more than $1 to $65.20 Friday. Monday there was no floor trade and no closing price in the U.S. because of the Memorial Day holiday.
Brent futures for July lost $1.58 to close at $68.15 a barrel on London's ICE Futures exchange. In other trading, gasoline futures fell 10.58 cents to settle at $2.2979 a gallon after several refineries restarted on Tuesday. Dow Jones Newswires reported that Alliance Oil's refinery in Belle Chasse, La., and Valero Energy Corp.'s refinery Delaware City, Del., are both restarting. Together, the refineries process 428,500 barrels of crude oil a day.
Traders had bid up futures prices before the Memorial Day holiday, the unofficial kickoff to the summer driving season. However, retail gasoline prices fell last week, the Energy Information Administration reported.
The average retail price for gasoline dipped less than a penny to $3.209 a gallon from $3.218 a gallon in the previous week. Prices, though, are still 34.2 cents higher than a year ago.
Heating oil futures slipped 7.01 cents to finish at $1.8690 a gallon on the Nymex, while natural gas prices fell 4.9 cents to $7.591 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Jim Cramer's Stop Trading May 11th

Valero (NYSE: VLO), Chevron (NYSE: CVX): Cramer declared he's "had enough of Valero" after touting it as cheap for a long time. With the advent of summer driving season, the peak in refinery margins ends, Cramer said. Following its big run, he would sell CVX, which is a stock Cramer was bullish on even as "the shorts were emailing me and calling me a crime against humanity."
JMP Group (NYSE: JMP): Concerning this IPO, Cramer said, "I think this is a great niche investment bank, without a lot of risk ... it's a sleeper."
Cabela's (NYSE: CAB): Cramer said he "got burned" on this ammunition company because people don't drive their gas-guzzling sports utility vehicles 200 miles to go hunting, and he comments this retail stock is the hardest hit by gas prices.

'Bank of America (NYSE: BAC - News): 'I've got BAC that yields 4% ... This stock should pull back .... If it goes below $20, then you do a little buying. 'Jones Soda (NasdaqCM: JSDA): 'But JSDA, other than HANS, is the fastest grower out there. I'm doing a lot of work on JSDA... Do not lose sight of that!'Hansen Natural (NasdaqCM: HANS)Accuray (NasdaqGM: ARAY): 'I think you're fine.'Harsco (NYSE: HSC - News): 'I think that this is a quintessential great industrial management company ... that's the kind of stock to buy right here. HSC, only about $1 off its high, but notice how it's held up. It is not that linked to housing. It is mostly industrial equipment.'Cummins (NYSE: CMI - News)Parker-Hannifin (NYSE: PH - News)Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT - News)Terex (NYSE: TEX - News)Lamson & Sessions (NYSE: LMS - News): 'Remember, I felt that this company is a natural to be acquired. They are in talks ... I think this company is worth substantially higher than where it's selling ... I am not worried about the earnings, and the P/E is very low. In other words, continue to buy LMS... 'VeriFone (NYSE: PAY - News): ' I think that PAY - which is linked to retail - is a fabulous stock. I am surprised it's come down this much from its high. I actually want to load up the truck with PAY right here. That's too cheap!'Charter Communications (NasdaqGM: CHTR): 'Do not lose heart! This is a play off of what I regard as being the 'virtuous circle' of being able to refinance, now that rates have come down... CHTR is good ... I want you to buy it.'Comcast (NasdaqGS: CMCSA)Time Warner (NYSE: TWX - News)Allegheny Technologies (NYSE: ATI - News): 'Don't forget that you need ATI steel when you build an ethanol plant, and that stock's off nicely from its high. I'm pulling the trigger right here!'Disney (NYSE: DIS - News): 'DIS is doing very well, it's got superior management. It's pulled back $1.50. I'll pull the trigger on DIS.'

Stock Market Wrapup Mar. 27

Stocks traded weakly today as investors became skittish over fears that problems in the subprime mortgage market are going to spill over into other sectors and lead to a slowing of the economy. Exacerbating those fears was a sharp loss by one of the nation's largest homebuilders, which said it could no longer accurately forecast its results for this year, along with a report of declining consumer confidence. The 10-year Treasury note also traded lower today, while crude oil futures closed up fractionally.
The catalyst for today's slump was the fiscal Q1 profit report from Florida-based homebuilder Lennar (NYSE: LEN - News). The company's FQ1 profit plunged -73%, driven lower by weak sales, the woes of the subprime sector, and rising land prices. Lennar joins fellow builders KB Homes (NYSE: KBH - News), Hovnanian Enterprises (NYSE: HOV - News), and Toll Brothers (NYSE: TOL - News) as reporting sharply lower earnings in the past month. The company acknowledged it would not meet its previously issued forecast for full-year earnings, and said it was "not comfortable" with making any further predictions at this time.
Lennar's report was in many respects not surprising, given what its competitors previously announced and coming as it did on the heels of yesterday's surprisingly weak report on February new-home sales from the Commerce Department. January sales were also sharply lower, the government previously said. The bad news from the housing sector, and a recent surge in prices at the pump, was reflected in a drop in consumer confidence as measured in a monthly survey by The Conference Board, a private business group.
In market news today, Pennsylvania utility operator PPL (NYSE: PPL - News) hit its second-consecutive new 52-week high after Lehman Brothers upgraded the stock to "overweight" from "equal weight," and boosted its target to $47 from $38. The stock added 2.7%, topping the $40.05 one-year high it set on Monday.
Independent refiner Valero Energy (NYSE: VLO - News) closed higher after announcing in a regulatory filing that it was delaying a planned expansion in Quebec and canceling another refinery project in Texas. The company was expected to discuss its plans at an industry conference tomorrow. Valero cited the need for controlling its capital spending in the face of rising refinery construction costs.
Shares of automaker DaimlerChrysler (NYSE: DCX - News), meanwhile, rose on reports that two different private equity groups, assisted by Wall Street banks, would submit bids for the company's troubled Chrysler unit by as early as Thursday. According to a report in the Detroit News, Blackstone Group and Centerbridge Partners have assembled a group of banks that includes Lazard (NYSE: LAZ - News), Lehman Brothers (NYSE: LEH - News), and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC - News) for one bid. Another offer for the carmaker, the newspaper reported, may come from Cerberus Capital Management with help from Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE: GS - News).

Stock Market Wrapup Feb. 21

Inflation fears sparked by a rise in consumer prices and Federal Reserve comments detailed in the minutes of the last FOMC meeting combined to push stocks to a mixed finish today. Blue Chips as measured by the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 Index traded lower, while the Nasdaq composite managed to eke out a small gain. Crude oil prices reversed course. After declining yesterday on warmer temperatures in key heating oil markets, oil jumped sharply to close above $60 a barrel. Crude has been trading in a fairly narrow band for the past couple of weeks. The 10-year Treasury note also dipped on the inflation news.
The consumer price index rose 0.2% in January, the Labor Department reported. That was down from the 0.4% increase in December, but still more than the 0.1% increase economists expected. Core CPI rose 0.3% in January after a 0.1% gain in December. The increase in the core reading, which excludes food and energy, also rose more sharply than economists had forecasted. Also weighing on stocks was the release of the meeting minutes from last January's rate-setting meeting. The Fed governors debated whether it was time to change their bias away from fighting inflation to a more neutral stance, but decided there was enough of an inflation threat to continue its long-standing policy.
In earnings news, the nation's largest prescription benefits manager was one of the day's top performers after posting profits that surged past Wall Street's expectations. Medco Health Solutions (NYSE: MHS - News) added 10% after reporting a 29% increase in its Q4 profit. The company raised its guidance for the current quarter and said it would increase its share buyback program after posting record profits of $229 million, or 77 cents per share.
Nasdaq stocks managed a small gain in large measure due to a strong performance by Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL - News). The stock advanced 4% after receiving a boost from Prudential Securities, which raised its earnings target for the current quarter. Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT - News) managed a modest gain today as well on positive comments about Windows Vista from Chairman Bill Gates yesterday. Gates' comments seemed to contrast with recent reduced guidance from CEO Steve Ballmer. Subscribers can read further analysis on these two tech leaders in today's issue.
The news wasn't as good for other sector bellwethers. Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ - News) slid despite reporting a 26% increase in its fiscal Q1 profit after the bell last night. Analysts suggested the printer and computer maker had probably achieved most of the savings it could realize from cost-cutting. Intel (Nasdaq: INTC - News) and Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO - News) also moved lower today.
In the energy sector, Valero Energy (NYSE: VLO - News) added 3% after Friedman Billings Ramsey raised its earnings estimate for the independent oil refiner and suggested the company will increase its stock buyback plan this year. FBR maintained its "outperform" rating on Valero and raised its target from $79 to $82. Other independent refiners also moved higher, including Tesoro (NYSE: TSO - News), up 3%; Holly (NYSE: HOC - News), which added 4%; and Frontier Oil (NYSE: FTO - News), which closed 3% higher. Frontier announced last night that it bought an ethanol company, Ethanol Management, for $31.1 million. Frontier had been a customer. The deal will enable the firm to ensure ethanol supplies for blending, and to expand ethanol production. Ethanol leaders like Aventine Renewable Energy Holdings (NYSE: AVR - News) and VeraSun Energy (NYSE: VSE - News) ended higher on the day.
