Apple Inc. (AAPL) Benefits From Cyber Monday

Shares of Apple Inc. rose Tuesday morning after an analyst noted online demand for iPods outstripped supply during the "Cyber Monday" shopping spree.
By midday, shares had gained $1.35 to $173.91.

Morgan Keegan & Co. analyst Tavis C. McCourt kept his "Market Perform" or "Hold" rating on the Cupertino, Calif., computer company. After the Cyber Monday and Black Friday rush, the 8-gigabyte and 16-gigabyte versions of the iPod Touch are on backorder at some of the Internet's leading retailers, and the 80-gigabyte iPod Classic is on backorder at least at one, he said.
Cheaper NAND , a type of flash , has led to more affordable electronic devices in recent years, iPods included.

Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) Requests Patent For iPod Phone Combo

Apple Computer Inc. has asked for a patent to protect a planned device combining a mobile phone with its iPod music player, according to reports Thursday.
With the public revelation of the patent application, which was filed in August, Cupertino-based Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL - News) fueled expectations that it may soon may sell a so-called iPhone.
Analysts have expected CEO Steve Jobs to branch out into an iPod-related line, capitalizing on the device's intense popularity, and speculated recently that an iPod may be in the works that merges a phone and adds up to $1.5 billion to the company's annual sales.

Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Zune Selling Badly

Microsoft Corp.'s Zune digital music device ranked No. 58 on the list of Amazon.com's best-selling electronic devices on Thursday, trailing such devices such as record turntables and a digital picture frame.
On Thursday afternoon, the $240 Apple 30-gigabyte iPod video player was the No. 1-selling electronic device at Amazon.com, followed by the $149 Apple two-gigabyte iPod Nano device and the Canon PowerShot SD600 digital camera. Six of the Seattle-based online retailer's (NASDAQ: AMZN - News) top eight-selling electronic devices were made by Microsoft rival Apple Corp. A device that holds a Nano player to one's sleeve was outselling the $239 Zune player, as was a package containing 50 Memorex CD-R disks.
Officials at the Redmond software giant (NASDAQ: MSFT - News) said Zune's wireless capability, which is unavailable on the Apple product, will set it apart.
"Zune is all about changing the game to make music more social, and at launch we are just scratching the surface of how wireless technology is going to enable social interaction in the future," said Bryan Lee, corporate vice president of Entertainment Business at Microsoft, at the product's Seattle launch on Nov. 13.

Bear Stearns (BSC) sets $100 price target on Apple (AAPL)

Apple Computer Inc. shares continued to flex their muscles Wednesday, rising 70 cents to $92.47 in early trading. Before the market opened, Bear Stearns analyst Andrew Neff raised his 12-month price target on Apple's stock to $100 a share from $94, saying that he is "optimistic about Apple's continued innovation and twin drivers" of iPods and Intel-based Macintosh computers. Neff said that after meeting with Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer, the company didn't provide any new financial updates, but that his customer checks show continued strong demand for iPods and Macs.

Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPod Beating Out Microsoft Inc.'s (MSFT) Zune

"I have never heard of the Zune," one retail clerk was quoted as saying in an analyst's note comparing Microsoft Corp.'s new music player to its much more popular rival, Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said in a note to investors Tuesday that a survey of clerks at 40 big box retailers found that only 8 percent recommend buying the Zune, while 75 percent recommend the iPod.
"In fact, some MP3 player salespeople had not even heard of the Zune, despite the fact that they sold it in their store," the analyst wrote.
Due to what he called a less than favorable reception, Munster doesn't expect the Zune to materially affect iPod sales in the current quarter.
Microsoft released the Zune less than two weeks ago. Munster noted the Zune held the 7th spot on Amazon's best-selling MP3 players list on Nov. 16, the Thursday of the week it launched. By the following Monday, it has already fallen down the list.
